Nintendo has announced that the Wii U will launch in Japan on December 8, 2012 at a price of 26,250 yen for the basic model and 31,500 yen for the premium model. This translates to roughly $336 and $406. The basic model will come with 8 GB of internal storage while the premium model will be equipped with 32 GB of storage. The Wii U will come with a single Game Pad controller. An extra one can be purchased for 13, 00 yen or $168.
Wii owners will be able to transfer their WiiWare and Virtual Console games from the Wii to the Wii U. Current owners of a Wii can continue to use their Wii Remote Plus, Wii Nunchuck, and Balance Board as the system will be backwards compatible. However, the Wii U is unable to play GameCube games.
Mario fans will be excited to know that New Super Mario Bros. U will launch with the Wii U. This is the first time since the Nintendo 64 was first released that a Mario game was available at launch. Also available when the Wii U goes on sale will be a game called NintendoLand.
A North American and European release date and price is expected to be announced shortly.
